What is third /// space?

Coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in 1989, a third space is  a social environment separate from the two primary, familiar environments of home ("first place") and workplace ("second place"). Think of your neighborhood watering hole, locally owned bookstore or favorite gift shop. Places that feel like home.

As society has evolved, and the internet became our primary way of staying connected, third spaces slowly but surely melted into the background and a vast majority of them disappeared altogether. With the surge of generative AI and often an inability to tell what's real from fake, people are craving real-life experiences that make them feel seen and safe. Spaces that reflect the richness of culture and reminders that we're more alike than different.

third /// space takes that quite literally, and is my love letter to DC of what it means to cultivate culture, community & creativity. A concept retail and community-centered space that offers a carefully curated collection of art, textiles and home goods alongside programming that both entertains and uplifts.

It is where we gather.

see you soon!
